The Bay Area Sleep Program
The Bay Area Sleep Program offers Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to adults who experience problems with sleep. CBT-I is recommend by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as the preferred treatment for insomnia. In fact, research shows that CBT-I is just as effective as sleep medication in the short-term, and more effective than medication in the long-term. Approximately 75% of people who receive CBT-I will show improvement with most returning to normal sleeping patterns.
The first step in treatment is to receive an in-depth evaluation of your sleeping problems. Besides an interview, your therapist will have you track your sleep habits for a week or two. After the evaluation, your therapist will provide you with a plan to address the root causes of your insomnia. This plan typically includes interventions such as stimulus control, sleep restriction and sleep hygiene. CBT-I is a short-term treatment with benefits that can last throughout one’s lifetime. Clients at the EBTC are typically seen for 5-8 sessions and have the option of meeting with a therapist for part of the treatment over Skype or the phone.
